November 22:  Plain Sight w/ Marina Caruso and Zak Risinger

“Plain Sight” is a conversation on critical cataloguing, a practice employed at the South Street Seaport Museum which involves identifying and addressing harmful language, stereotypes, and outdated references in their collections and present materials responsible for research and discovery.

November 1: EMPIRE CITY: Fireside chat w/ Chenjerai Kumanyika + Artist Talk w/ Chris Cook

Artist Talk with artist Chris Cook and curator + artist Kamau Ware; concerned with the challenging documentation of Black suffering - baring witness. 

Empire City dives into the hidden history of the largest police force in the world, tracing its roots from slavery to rival police gangs. As society debates the future of policing, this podcast uncovers the origins of the NYPD and the everyday people who resisted its power throughout history.

A sonic salon of Black Diasporic musical medicine with DJ Jahmedicine, co-hosted by WJ Higgins and Kamau Ware.

 

November 15: Black Brooklynites w/ Prithi and Teresa Vega w/ Robyne Walker 

Revisiting Histories of Free Black Communities in Brooklyn in the 19th Century, Prithi will be in conversation with Robyne Walker Murphy with a genealogical lens. Prithi and Robyne will be joined by family historian and anthropologist, Teresa Vega,  who traces her family lines to Lenapehoking and the First Africans, First enslaved Malagasy as well as Abraham Jansen. Her ancestors played pivotal roles in the history of Brooklyn and beyond. Together, they will explore the connections between Brooklyn's past and present, discussing how the legacy of Free Black communities has shaped the borough’s identity and spirit.

 

Founded in 2010 to celebrate the impact of the African Diaspora on New York, Black Gotham Experience (BGX) is honored to present Council 400, an eight-week engagement  commemorating the African Diaspora’s impact on the territory of New York City from 1624 to 2024 from October 10th to November 30th. This investigation will be documented creating an archive for future generations. Activities curated by Black Gotham Experience will take place primarily at BGX Gallery in the Seaport including a group exhibition, talks, wellness workshops, film screenings, and award-winning historical walks.
