Join Black Gotham Experience and our friends at the Seaport Museum for a special evening at NERDY THURSDAYS—BGX’s contemporary take on the Harlem Renaissance salon—blends themes from the Museum’s landmark exhibition The Promise of Liberty: Words That Shaped a Nation alongside Battle in the Margins.
August 27th will be the 250th Anniversary of the largest battle of the American Revolution and the first major conflict after the Declaration of Independence. The Battle of Brooklyn was a decisive victory for the British and as an immediate consequence, New York City would remain under British occupation until November 25th 1783. What transpired in those seven years sets the stage for the mass emancipation of formerly enslaved Black people that was recorded in the artifact - the Book of Negroes. This will be a special fireside chat on the anniversary of the Battle of Brooklyn that will open up to a town hall discussion about the Promise of Liberty exhibition that includes a first edition of Frederick Douglass’s 1855 autobiography My Bondage and My Freedom, featuring his seminal speech “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?”, and an advance copy of Martin Luther King Jr.’s iconic March on Washington speech.
After the conversation, stay to enjoy complimentary drinks, a themed soundtrack by the featured DJ, and connect with others in a welcoming space for conversation, reflection, and new ideas.
