Sugar Shadow is a visual story about the people of African descent in the colonial north in the 18th century whose presence is often overlooked in contemporary urban spaces. This inaugural installment was commissioned by the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy to acknowledge the presence of the Black people that lived in the Van Cortlandt House and held by the Van Cortlandt family. This exhibition adds a new way of seeing Black bodies missing from the historic record by artist / historian Kamau Ware.
